Public Safety Management Program

If you answered "yes" to any of the above statements, the public safety management major is a good option for you.

The major in Public Safety Management integrates key elements of public affairs with the administration of emergency services, the principles of public safety, and the art of decision-making. This exciting, interdisciplinary program will train you for a leadership role in the management of life-saving public services (including fire and EMT), disaster preparedness, homeland security, and private-sector security.

At IUPUI we will prepare you for an impact career in public safety management through a broad curriculum involving the study of public safety, criminal justice, financial management, terrorism and public policy, public management, emergency services administration, solid and hazardous waste management, research methods, and GIS techniques.

Careers in Public Safety Management

Devastating natural disasters and terrorist attacks have increased the public's awareness of the need for effective emergency preparedness. The public safety management major will prepare you for a variety of occupations within public safety organizations at the local, regional, and national level including, but not limited to:

Credit for Fire Training

Full-time firefighters who are trained and employed by the following departments* are eligible for nine undergraduate credit hours from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. You can apply these credits towards any of SPEA's undergraduate degree programs. The course credit is for Principles of Public Safety SPEA-J 376, Emergency Services Administration SPEA-V 375, and Internship in Public Affairs SPEA-V 380.
